Putting in the time now will save headaches later

It’s a job that’s easy to put off, but looking after your farm machinery as early into the winter months as possible, is one that you can’t afford to avoid any longer. Not only is now a good time to get your gear back in tip top shape for spring harvesting, but it’ll keep your investments running better for longer and save you money in the long run.

A thorough inspection and clean are just the ticket to keeping things running smoothly and preparing your machinery for its annual recommended servicing – here are our top tips:

  • Give your machinery a good once-over to see what might need repairing ie. burnt-out headlights and cracks in the windscreen. Clean dust, dirt and debris off equipment to prevent rust, and properly lubricate/oil equipment.
  • The spark plugs, distribution points and condenser of the ignition system should be replaced, unless you have already done so in the last year. Take a look at the wiring – rodents are renowned for getting in and having a chew so keep an eye out for any sign of deterioration.
  • Check the cooling system – remove any dirt from the grill using a hose and inspect for any leaks around the radiator, then drain and flush the cooling system before topping up with the recommended fluid.
  • Battery fluid levels need to be checked and topped up as necessary. Clean any corroded terminals or wires with a baking soda solution and ensure that the battery remains fully charged to avoid freezing.
  • Engine maintenance not only protects against breakdowns but can also improve fuel efficiency – if your machinery has a gasoline engine its carburetor will need to be returned to the recommended settings. The fuel filter will also need servicing to eliminate the risk of fuel contamination
  • Diesel engine filtration systems also need servicing, although leave the servicing of injectors to the experts, as trying to take them apart yourself may cause damage.
  • Put fresh fuel and oil in your machinery so it’s good to go come springtime. Drain and refill the hydraulic system’s fluid at least once a year to get rid of dirt particles.
  • Top up the level of transmission lubricant if needed and if you’ve used a heavier lubricant during the summer months, replace it with a lighter one.
  • Check tyre pressure, and tyre casing/wheel rims for any damage.
  • Bird’s nests are another cheeky culprit come spring – take a good look in and around your machinery before you get things rolling.
